Well, I'm sure it's bearing the load within the constructed cell, but that would be all. It's an interesting observation, though; I wasn't aware of this modification. Seems likely to be for small-caliber boghammer-bashing weapons, but that's wholly a guess on my part.

I wouldn't be extremely surprised if RAM eventually went to a 3x3 arrangement (5" missiles, compared to 21" Tomahawk eg), but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. When you have empty cells sitting around, there's no reason to push the envelope (which costs time, money and probably early-design-cycl...

Only four. I kind of agree, except that I bet RAM is a lot cheaper than ESSM. I understand that there is a big pile of USN Mk 41 cells that sit empty in the fleet. I'd also feel a little differently about it if they were wasting space in a Mk 41 SDL instead of Strike-length (which, as I understand, ...

Pad could be bigger, hangar definitely needs to be for so many aircraft as that. There's some virtue to the idea of two separate SPY-1 installations (on something so already-stupidly-big as this, at least), but the secondary arrays (the forward-facing aft pair and the aft-facing forward pair) probab...

I see no reason that a SPY-1F/Mk-41 FREMM would not be possible.

I favor the US system for a variety of reasons, but I am about out the door right now and don't immediately have time to explain.

I would certainly expect the depth charges aft to be landed for lightweight ASW torpedos. The latter were initially considered (at least in the USN) to be a depth charge replacement, with negligible range but a very large effective damage radius.

The battleship surely does not have much to fear from modern (Western) AShMs from a hull-integrity point of view, but that's not the point in the modern world. Electronics are effectively un-armor-able, and will be torn up nicely by the warhead on a modern AShM - that's what they're for, after all. ...

RAM was first tested out of Mk 41 only a few weeks ago, so you're not THAT dated. I still think you're going to have serious stability problems with such a large Mk 41 mounted that high above the waterline on a hull this small. 48 cells is a shitload anyway; this is as many cells as a freaking Type ...

Turrethead's rather unrelated work split to here. I'm kind of proud of this work in a technical (vs lunatic political) sense and would like to keep things fairly on-topic.

Hmm, interesting. At first I thought, Oh No Erik has caught "Kirovitis" (the disease that forces you to take a Kirov lengthen it to 800m and then add 20in guns, 400 Granits and sixty 3-D radars, ususally AEGIS for no other reason that 'it looks cool') but no this is actually something you can look ...
