Well, the Mackinaw was Coast Guard, not Navy, and was also landlocked and couldn't leave the Great Lakes and once Mackinac was transferred to the Coast Guard after the war she served in the Atlantic so there was less opportunity for confusion.

Gibbs probably wasn't privy to all those discussions when designing her. Perhaps if they had been built, they would have been modified.

Her starboard side is certainly a mess, but sitting on rocks for 19 months will do that to a ship. Looks like she was supported fore and aft, hence the severe damage, with the midship looking undamaged. Wouldn't be surprised if her whole hull is warped.
