As Smurfania is at war, one or two thoughts: I agree entirely that Surigao would be an excellent commerce raider, so long as she carries enough fuel. With money tight, Jellicoe wanted 4x2 9.2in cruisers in 1907/08, (about 15,000tons, 25knots, to kill armoured cruisers) but von der Tann appeared and ...

I believe it. There are NO surviving official drawings of HMS Exeter (apart from the very first red ink minor amendments to a December 1927 drawing of York still with three funnels)

What was happening was that two design teams (RN and Vickers) were working on battlecruiser designs to improve on the Lion class. The early RN Tiger sketch designs were concerned first with better layout of the four 13.5in turrets, then with improving power. (see John Roberts British Battlecruisers,...

Signal: you may be "not sure about the timing" but you may well be right, though diesel fuel and fuel oil for burning to raise steam are not the same. 'New Amphion reached the design submission stage (Specification and 1/16in scale drawing - which Garlicdesign didn't get, I've only got a paper copy ...

A small point. I suppose whether the design was an "improved" Amphion might be argued, but it was officially termed "New Amphion"

I agree about using diesels generally. In this particular case there were design problems over structural strength and protection. The 6000 hp Vickers diesel was located in the aft engine room, with 12,000shp turbines remaining forward. However, the diesel was taller than the turbines, so the cylind...

HA = High Angle, but yes a term for AA. Usually restricted to medium calibre AA. The loading arrangements meant that the shells had to be lifted high if the gun was lowered to fire near the horizontal. Compare DP (dual-purpose) a more complex mounting not suffering that disadvantage.

The big advantage over Lion is that it will cost much less, so that more can be built, and used for tasks for which Lion cannot be risked.
Ship-to-ship single combat is not what navies are for. Of course, if you want to fight Lion 1-to-1, this ship won't do. Remember Blucher.

"Amphion differed only in some details aft from Active;" well ...
Unlike the other scouts, Amphion had only two screws. See pm

Thanks for clarification. Very interesting that Greece seemed to want a 'fast division'of one ship. I still think 5 is a lot for Greece. QE's were very expensive, and I doubt whether UK would supply. They did after all accept one from Malaya and hoped for three more from Canada, but went on to build...
