This design always struck me as a bit strange, with the long low hull. To me that would make her quite a wet design in a seaway but I guess weight considerations cam...

If she's laid down in 1917, I'd go with the more austere New Mexico superstructure. Most depictions I've seen are like that. It would be interesting though to see the more robust "Big Five" style superstructure.
It was. It was basically an 18" version of South Dakota. The actual sketch was drawn mainly to show how switching to turreted secondaries would impact the design so there's no details on the design.
I've got a larger version of the profile that I scanned from "Damned by Destiny". I had planned on drawing her and several other ships from the book, but other work put the kibosh on that.
