The Australian National Line (ANL) was formed through the Australian Coastal Shipping Commission in 1957. This government agency was tasked with the management of ships which were owned previously by the Australian Shipping Board. In 1970 the advent of containers brought with it a revolution in shipping which necessitated new ship types as well as new handling techniques. For that purpose the Darwin Trader was built for the coastal trade and placed under the ownership of the ANL. The ship was equipped with two 35t gantry cranes as well as 10t crane. These were used in ports which lacked containers handling facilities. In 1983 these cranes were removed when most of the coastal ports had some sort of containers cranes.

The motor tanker Abida was built in 1958, part of A class 19,000 tons tankers, built in the Netherlands, for the transportation of crude oil from the Persian Gulf to the Rotterdam refinery. After 1960 there was a slight change of colours, the funnel being now red and the shell emblem yellow.
So here is the Abida as built

and here after 1960

The Abida served with Shell Tankers until 1985 when she was scrapped at Gadani Beach Pakistan.

Really nice work. Very sleek looking tankers, from an age when merchant ships still had style.
