Not necessarily. At a guess I'd say it was attached to the deck, inboard of the railing, which would allow the bulwarks to be opened.
Alternatively it could have been attached aft of the bulwark. Not exactly optimal, but not unheard of either.

why? the bulwark lowers to the outside, if the backstay is fitted to the deck.......

Yes, that would do it. I wonder what that spar between the mainmast and the jig boom is.
Could you post your refs? I might have a few ideas.

No. It's a separate sail on its own yard. I think the picture makes it shorter than it is supposed to be.

Oh and I think it should be a carronade since a 32lb gun would rip the ship apart.
