I would suggest a little ligther "black" ... Using a lighter gray.

will do, though I must warn you now that not all of my monitors will be 100 percent accurate as it's almost impossible to find photos of theses ships in good detail(especially one that show the whole ship with the underwater part of the hull showing) so some might be based off of conjecture and speculation more than others especially the the more obsure classes.

Each one has slight differences anyhow to begin with and were constantly being modified.
I've collected a few drawings over the years that might be of some use. No monitors, but some Confederate stuff and good schematics of the Cairo.
