Paul,Eagle did not operate Phantoms as part of her air wing, only used for trials with the type.I now have a good drawing of her as built most generously supplied by Columbamike, but if you have a good drawing of Albion,Bulwark or Centaur that would be wonderful :)

Thanks to the link to the excellent website given by Erik in my John Wayne thread I found a picture of the RN WW2 carrier 114mm gun turret design.

The top of the gun turret is sculpted to be flush to the flight deck. Presumbably so you can run an aircraft's wheels over it without falling off the edge of the deck.

It was a shame Eagle was structurly better than Ark Royal was by the 1970's Eagle was retired and christmas tree'd for spares for Ark Royal.

That last picture you posted ia of an Illustrious class carrier which had a slightly different gun turrets.
The flight deck was extended around the turret to increase its area as the turrets limited the width of the flight deck as seen here [ img ]

Don,t laugh at the new turrets.I have just drawn one of Mrs Bombhead's saucepans.Looking at the scan of the turret arrangement close up you see there is not a lot you can do to make them more detailed, any ideas?

That is a fantastic photo of the Eagle, and look at that air wing!

As to how to draw the turret there are lots of good images here:

And links to the Vickers photo archive with images of the workings of the actual mounting.

One thing about these turrets is the exterior of the house is very simple so there really isn't much to draw unless they are pointing straight at you.

65? The old goat! I've promised L.P. we'll watch the first half tonight, with a large glass of single malt and my trusty Springer under my feet - strange though, she's not that excited (L.P. that is).

I think the shading of the Type 984 is pretty aggressive; I'd tone it down quite a bit. Otherwise, fine work.
