A practical look at ship's design. Most Japanese carriers sunk from air attack, and an armoured deck might increase the chances of survival, or so they thought, as Taiho herself sunk by a submarine torpedo. Japanese carriers were very lacking in the protection of aviation fuel, and the fuel lines, and this IMHO was the main reason for the carriers losses.
