Interesting ships, and really beautiful art work.

Yes, this is a most interesting topic, the never built designs for the Kreigsmarine, that were not super battleships (yawn). There must have quite a few projects that never made it :)

Here's an earlier variant for the minelayer: The armament was 'only' two 37mm twins, two 20mm twins and four 105mm singles. In return, there was a hangar and catapult for a seaplane.

This is the version of the mentioned artillery training ship variant, obviously a peace-time outfit. The places of the 37mm twins are taken over by 105mm exercise cannons, plus there is an additional set behind the boats. There is a base for a catapult, but it's not installed. The hangar space is used as a classroom. As an artillery training ship, the main armament now consists of four 127mm cannons.

Great work on these relatively unknown ships!

Another variant of the artillery training ship moved the aft superstructure more forward, increased the hangar/classroom height and got rid of the angled end of the hangar.

The final design had gotten rid of the hangar and replaced the exercise guns with 37mm twins. The exercise cannons were now mounted side-by-side on the afterdeck. All main guns are now centerline-mounted and the minerails are on deck.

Beautiful piece of work, DG! I tend to agree with PB: These smaller ships are much more interesting to read about and watch than the megalomaniac ideas the Z-plan is usually famous for. :)
