The six vessels of the Vanguard-class form the seaborne CASD element of the United Kingdom's (and by extension, that of the wider Commonwealth) nuclear "dyad" deterrence system, alongside the nuclear equipped Typhoon fighters and Lancer bombers of the Royal Air Force.

The Vanguard-class entered service in the late 1990s as a replacement for the preceding Resolution-class, with the newer and larger boats also introducing the new Trident missile system. At least one submarine is on patrol in the North Atlantic at all times (a patrol lasts 8 weeks), another on immediate standby to sail, and the remaining four performing routine training and/or maintenance. Each boat has a total of 140 crew, and (like its predecessors) draws inspiration from US Navy SSBN doctrine in having two shared crews that alternate patrol/training deployments. All six vessels are based at HMNB Faslane in Scotland as part of the 10th Submarine Squadron, with Trident missiles stored and loaded onboard at nearby RNAD Coulport. As Trident is a US designed system, training missile launches and research are performed in co-operation with the US Navy at training ranges in the Eastern USA. All crew introductory training is performed at the Royal Navy Trident School (RNTS - formerly RNPS) at Faslane. The vessels will be replaced by the 6 new vessels of the Dreadnought-class, currently under construction and due to enter service in the early 2030s.

These vessels each carry 16 UGM-133 Trident II ICBMs (each of which can carry 8 of the Mk 4A MIRV equipped, British designed/built "Holbrook" nuclear warheads). In addition, up to 16 Spearfish torpedoes are carried as a last resort self-defence weapon.
