In 1989 HMCS Preserver entered refit at St Johns Shipyard during the work she suffered a catastrophic fire destroying the engineering and accomadation spaces. Structural damage to the ship was so significant that she was scrapped insitu. This Left the Canadians with a shortage of AOR capability. The Governement decided to replace Preserver and Provider which had always suffered problems in high seas. Looking at existant AOR programs the Canadian government decided to order Fort Victoria class AOR's but with some changes they were made double skinned and the medical capabilities were upgraded. The armament and electronics fit were to follow the original concept for the Fort victoria class but be based on the then proposed Halifax Frigates. Canadian yards were busy would be busy with work on the Halifax class so it was decided to order bare boats (Ie without armament and electronics) from Harland and Wolff in Belfast and for them then to sail to St Johns Shipbuilders for final fitting out.
Armament included 30mm cannon, 20mm Phalanx and Evolved Sea sparrow.
The Contract covered 3 vessels:-

HMCS Fort Chambly
HMCS Fort Fredrick
HMCS Fort Rudd Hill (later cancelled but completed for Royal Navy)

I certainly like it. But why the SAM VLS amidships? Is that required in this type of platform?

what type of VLS do you have on board? based on the halifax, I suspect mk 48 mod 0, but I have some doubts if that is an position from which those can be reloaded......

The original concept for the Fort Victoria class was as a mother ship to austere frigates who would only be carrying ASW sensors, SSM's and Anti sub torpedoes and limited SAM assets. The AOR was to carry the helecopters and provide some of the Air defence capibility. VLS seawolf was placed in the RAS centre Plenty of photos of fort victoria from above clearly show it at naming she had the radars fitted as well looked impressive). Yes for Sea Sparrow VLS system is Mk48 mod 0. And no navy currently replenishes VLS systems at sea it is to difficult.
The concept was dropped due to end of cold war and expense the cheaper solution was to fit Phalanx. However an AOR is a high value asset and in an age were anti ship missiles go for large targets (like AOR's) I think a layered AD system for them is prudent hence the reason I've revived the concept.

you might want to let the VLS top be a bit above the deck, like this one: http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz22 ... Snew-7.png
also, you forgot the anchor ;)

Acelancelot considered that but as with some of the other vessels fitted with sea sparrow VLS I decided to fit it flush with the RAS centre roof.
