Thanks all for the compliments. Just to explain some things about Albany, I figured that the design would be something of a lower-end LPD, almost like a Bay-class LSD but with a hangar. CIWS was something of an afterthought, but it would probably be fitted with an extra gun to the rear of the flight deck and be accompanied by significant escort in the event of wartime, so I don't see it as too much of an issue. I did also consider adding an SPS-49 set (scavenged from an Esperence class frigate - which will be coming soon btw), but ultimately decided against it to go with the whole lower-end thing. And in regards to the old prop, does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've been drowning in university assignments recently, but I found a little time to quickly assemble a basic structure to the aviation component of the RWN

The Royal Westralian Naval Air Arm is comparatively large, and expensive to the likes of Australia's Fleet Air Arm, somewhat a result of a policy ensuring that every ship capable of organic helicopter operations has a helicopter. In this case, ships' flights are provided by 571 Squadron, operating a full complement of 24 Wildcats, with 17 of these required for shipborne duties. 552 Squadron serves as tactical transport and logistics, and its NH90's primarily operate from replenishment ships, shore bases or Albany. 556 Squadron provides the medium-heavy lift element for Albany, whilst 401 Squadron is primarily a joint training squadron with the Army. Interestingly, the EC135's of 401 are the only vehicles in the entire Westralian military that have their 'black swan' roundels in red instead of black or grey, a result of a mix-up in paint orders when they were constructed. It was decided to keep the red swans instead of fixing the error, simply to save on costs. 401 also operates 2 Avanti Evos in the VIP role.

In the early 1960s, the RWN drew up requirements for a new class of frigate, preferably equipped with recently emerging guided missiles. By 1963, it had been decided to purchase 6 of the new Brooke-class frigates under construction for the US Navy. However, these plans were cancelled the following year in an act of protest to US pressure to enter the Vietnam War, and new plans were drawn up to procure a new class of frigate. This was to be based on a lengthened version of the Type 12M hull, with construction to be split between the UK and Westralia; the basic hull in Britain and the new superstructure, and fitment of systems and weapons, in Westralian shipyards. One of the most prominent alterations was the new split-funnel, which started from a single base before splitting into a y-shape. Despite the cancellation of the purchase of US ships, the new class of frigate was to be fitted with the Tartar missile and its control system, and studies were undertaken to ascertain with the Mark 42 5" gun could be installed in place of the British Mark VI 4.5" mount (though the Mark 42 was ultimately found to be too heavy), delivering a similar capability to the Brooke-class design. Construction began in 1966, and the first ship, Esperance was launched in 1968 and commissioned late the following year.

The first significant upgrade to the Esperance class came in 1984, influenced by lessons learned from participation in the Falklands War. The class began to receive the capability to fire both SM-1 and Harpoon from the Mk 22 launcher, and the Mark 6 gun was replaced by a Mk 45 Mod 1 5" system. Further improvements were made to communications, and the now vintage SPS-10 radar was replaced with SPS-67.

Armament refit: Mk 45 Mod 1 127mm, Mk 22 firing SM-1 and Harpoon, 2 x M2 shifted to bridge-wings
Systems refit: SPQ-9 and SPG-60 as part of Mk 86 GFCS, SPS-55, SPS-67

Another, more minor refit was carried out in 1989, removing Ikara and adding Phalanx CIWS and GAM-B01 in place of the old Oerlikons

The classes final and most significant refit came in 1996, service life being extended due to delays in acquisition of the replacement Broome class. This brought in completely new systems, most notably SMART S, SPG-49, and Mk 41 VLS firing RIM-7M, as well as RHIBs replacing the ships boats, and diesels replaced the steam turbines that had powered the vessels for the past quarter of a century.

Neat, they certainly look the part though I'm not sold on the amidships Mk.22.

Please, please replace the truck-sized Corvus launcher!

Otherwise, these are looking very nice. I'm not really sold on SMART-S and SPS-49... I think I'd simply use the former, replacing SPS-52. I'm skeptical of replacing a steam plant with a diesel one, since so many ship services and auxiliaries would be steam-powered. Probably just as cheap to build a whole new ship.

The Van Speijk/Ahmad Yani class had their steam plant replaced with diesels, so I wouldn't think it as totally out of the realms of realism, and SMART S and SPG-49 was modeled off the Karel Doorman's mix of SMART-S and LW-08.

An interesting design.
I would be tempted to reduce the height of the foremast, at the moment it seems too high for what you need.

Looking not too bad. I am not certain you would really want the launcher between the boiler room and the turbines. There is also one big issue: the primary arc for your director and your missile differ quite a lot, so your field of fire forward is not available due to the launcher being blocked by funnel, mast and boats, while the aft arc is blocked by the mast.
The first operational export Mk 22 GMLS was in 1974, so politically you might need close ties with the US to allow that....... but it is not out of the realm of possiblilities. I am worried about the single long superstructure, this might result in damage due to the ship bending in the superstructure. I would recommend splitting the superstructure aft of the funnel, and possibly again near the hangar.

I do wonder if the Mk 87 or Mk 92 FCS would not be an better fit for these ships in the 1984+ refit then the purely gunfire focussed Mk 86 FCS.

Do note there is an better SMART-S drawing around these days :P For inspiration on sensor fits: look up the KDX-I and Halifax class, I think.

I am certainly not sold on replacing the Mk 22 with an Mk 41, even a single 8 cell Mk 41 breaks out of the round 'cilinder' of the Mk 13, let alone the Mk 22. You would have to rebuild most of the midships area to let this work, is it worth it to do so quite close to the end of their service life? is adding an Mk 48 VLS not an better idea, on deck or only penetrating a single deck?

I suspect the funnel would move, change or even be doubled up on this ship when the powerplant is replaced with diesels. Hell, you would have to look into the actual powerplant size, as you need to replace the weight both in the boiler room and the turbine room, changing either your shafts or adding electric coupling, I suppose? no idea how it was done in indonesia, but due to their compact machinery space the replacement might have been a lot simpler then what you have here....
