VF11 Hawk-bat
The VF11, designed by Americ, was an attempt at standardization between military branches with the aircraft being used by both the army and navy as a carrier borne fighter. This proved too difficult for Americ as neither branch was fond of the fighter, with the navy rejecting it outright as it was too heavy. The army airforce adopted the aircraft, but only in small numbers at around 140 units, as the later VF6 was found to be significantly better performing.
The original models of the VF11 mounted two 12.7mm machine guns in the nose, later increasing to four on the B model. With the arrival of the VF12, Americ experimented with modifying some existing planes to mount the same inline engine, reducing its weight and hopefully increasing its dogfighting ability. While some airbases adopted the newer model that came about as a result of the experimentation, it wasn't enough to save the aircraft. The VF11 was retired by 1343.
