L6

[ img ]

The L6 light tank came into existence based on the need for airborne infantry to have armoured support. To accomplish this the L6 was made to be incredibly light, 7.6 tonnes, which allowed it to be carried by a dedicated glider and landed into a drop zone. It was protected only against rifle caliber guns, but was quick, mobile and provided the armoured machine gun nest that infantry appreciated.

While the Antaran Army airborne had been around since before the start of the war, the requirements for the L6 appeared in 1344, and the tanks themselves entered production in 1345. The L6 was only used in the Invasion of Aemore in 1346, with mixed results, however through no fault of the actual tank. A significant portion of gliders that carried L6s or other vehicles/weaponry were shot down or crashed on landing, presumably making it too difficult for the tank to exit. Several tanks were seized after the glider crew and occupants failed to link up with friendly infantry.

In total, only four tanks were successfully able to link up with other friendly forces and engage in combat with the enemy. By accounts from these airborne troops, the vehicle served its purpose and was a valuable asset. The limited success of the L6 was enough to convince the Army to further pursue armour support for the airborne wing.

L8

[ img ]

The L8 was a further development of the airborne tank concept originally brought about with the L6, again weighing a little under 8 tonnes. The L8s extremely light weight allowed it to be airlifted by helicopters and later dropped by aircraft. From the get-go the L8 was planned to have multiple variants as its small size limited the array of tasks it could be accomplished, as opposed to a main battle tank.

The U variant, the production model, featured a rotating turret with a HV 76mm auto loading gun, and cupolas for the commander and gunner. Both cupolas had fuly enclosed machine gun mounts, a .50 cal for the commander and a .30 cal for gunner. The 'U' stood for 'universal', as it was meant to support infantry and provide modest anti-tank capability for its time.

The P (self propelled) variant, introduced in 1359, mounted a shielded 105mm howitzer and could provide airborne infantry with very effective and mobile artillery support.

The D (tank destroyer) variant utilized a twin 105mm recoilless rifle system. The L8E1 (officially L8(D)A1) modification added a gun shell for the gunner, giving up cover while reloading. The gunner's cupola was also moved and reduced in size. The shield also meant the turret could not be fully rotated. While somewhat troublesome to operate, it's anti-tank capability was adequate.

The L8A2, an unplanned variant that used the TOW missile launcher introduced in the 70s. The A2 was the last version of the vehicle, being retired in 1384.

OT (1)

[ img ]

The OT-1 (O - half-track, T - transport, infantry) was a lightly armoured half-track personnel carrier based on the WS-3 armoured scout car, elongated and with the back wheels replaced with tracks. Unlike regular transport trucks, the OT1 ferried troops into hot combat zones and remained with the infantry to provide light fire-support.

Various modifications to the OT1 were up-gunnings to its singular .30/.50 cal armament. With this in mind its widely accepted as the first pseudo IFV in the world. Other mods of the OT1 armed it with mortars, howitzers, anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns, making it the most versatile vehicle the Army.

The GL3 'Mongoose' was a six wheeled light infantry tank introduced in the mid-interwar period for the Antaran Army, specifically its small national guard and singular infantry division at the time. The Mongoose was protected against rifle caliber machine guns, however fell prey to light AT artillery and AT rifles at the start of the World War in the intense urban combat that made up a sizable portion of the war on the homefront. In East Antara against the Arcadians, the Mongoose was too slow and vulnerable for the open terrain maneuver warfare. After only a few months, the GL3 was supplanted by several other vehicles that fulfilled its role a lot better.
