Darthpanda, I love your Skyraiders ! It was one of my possible choices for my next work.

Funny how the engine cowling looks small !
Thank you, which units do you want to make?

This was just a starting of an idea, i have no plans on drawing anything specific. Just keep on with the good work on those Skyraiders !

Good morning, guys!

Some british aircraft of the interwar period.

The De Havilland DH. 95 Flamingo was a British all-metal, twin-engined high-wing monoplane airliner, motorized by twin Perseus 9-cylinder, single row, sleeve valve radial aeroengine. With a crew of 2 pilots seated forward side by side and a radio operator behind them, and 12 to 17 passengers seats in the cabin. Flamingo first flown on December 1938. It was a modern and sound aircraft, capable of competing with the American Douglas DC-3 and Lockheed Model 10 Electra. One model, DH.95 Heresfordshire, was built to military specs, but due the war de 40 ordered were cancelled to free de Havilland factory to produce Tiger Moths trainers. Only 14 were built, and due the lack of spares, Flamingo was not a popular aircraft, despite beings Winston Churchill's favorite short/medium range transport and he flew it to visit Reynaud and the French leadership as the front collapsed on May 1940. Several aircraft survived the war, and were flown until the mid 1950s

The Cunliffe-Owen OA-Mk1 was a lifting-fuselage airliner designed and built by Vincent Burnelli. The only plane built was known as the Clyde Clipper. The sole aircraft was pressed into service by the RAF and was eventually turned over to the Free French Air Force in Africa (after a long flight, including a leg over ocupied France), where at one point it served as the personal transport of General Charles de Gaulle in 1941.

The Gloster F.9/37 was a British twin-engined cannon-armed heavy fighter. Intended for dispersed production by semi-skilled labour, the structure broke down into sub-assemblies. It was equiped with 1,060 hp Bristol Taurus radial engines, and in April 1939 demonstrated excellent performance, its maximum speed of 360 mph (580 km/h) being the best recorded by a British fighter at the time, but also was very manoeuvrable. Unfortunatelly, F.9/37 was not selected for production.

Finally, the Bristo Type 148, an all-metal, single engined, low wing monoplane, built as an army-cooperation aircraft. It lost in the competition to the well known Westland Lysander, which was prefered due the high wing and fixed landing gear, and did not progress past the two prototypes that were built.

Cheers.

PS: Do you know why two advanced valve sleeve radials as the Perseus and (specially) Taurus engines were not widely used? Thanks and cheers.

Edited: Done! Thanks, Hood!

Very nice additions.

Why de Havilland decided to name the DH.95 Flamingo is beyond me! Usually they chose pretty good names but this one seems very odd.

One slight nitpick, the panel lines feel too dark on the Flamingos compared with your other drawings.

The Perseus had a few commercial applications pre-war but its mid-30s applications for the Blackburn Skua/Roc and Botha didn't exactly help its cause. It was more powerful than the Mercury but probably not as reliable and by 1939 designers were looking at the much more powerful Hercules for military applications.
The Taurus had a poor reputation for reliability and the ability to get P&W Twin Wasps under Lend-Lease finished it off sadly. Again, a good engine when it worked but the 1,000hp class didn't really materialise, a lot of military aircraft by 1941-42 needed/wanted 1,500hp+ and for smaller stuff like trainers and transports (the few British types still in production) made do with cheaper Mercuries and US engines.

Thanks a lot for your comments, Hood! There are a lot of very interesting british designs in the 1930s. And the sleeve valve Bristol radials were very advanced. Its a pity that almost all the radials were overshadowed by the magnificent Merlin!

Yes, I think that probably the rivets were over ambitious in the panel lines (it was one of the few line drawings with rivets detailed). Specially in the blank drawing, I am going to try a plain line of the standard gray shade, of rework the rivets in line with the rivets of Bristol 148, this weekend. Cheers!

Dang it, DarthPanda. We really need to coordinate what we're drawing. I definitely like yours, too.

Good afternoon, guys!

More vintage aircraft:
An early 1930s british biplane for Norway´s air service, the Armstrong-Whitworth AW.35, unfortunatelly, due problems with the skis for winter service, the mass production in Norway of this aircraft was not achieved.
[ img ]

Hawker Hoopoe was another early 1930s biplane that failed to reach mass production, only one prototype was made.
[ img ]

The Boulton Paul P-71 was a twin engined biplane of all-metal construction. Two were built and unfortunatelly the were short lived in Imperial Airways, because were lost in accidents within a year of the introduction of the model.
[ img ]

The backbone of the Armee de l´Air long range heavy bombers in the mid 1930s was the 4-engined Farman F.221. An aesthetically ungainly model, was the first 4 engined bomber outside the Soviet Union.
[ img ]

NB: I was rather confused with the color of the Farman bomber: in the text is described as being green painted, but in the color drawings, it looks with a wide range of colors: from faded green, to olive green and even brown. I choose the standard green shade used in Metropolitan French units, with my appologies in case of mistake. Cheers.
