You could do like they do with bullet type in the gunbucket and sut the gauge in the upper right corner

With the Credits? That would work.

For example-
UK, LNER A-4 "Mallard"
Standard Gauge
(Navybrat85)

Like that?

Including the number of specific class members could be useful, I.E 4468 or 60022 for Mallard.

Something like that. Of course you'll have to specify whose standard gauge you're talking about since I'm fairly certain that the Russian and the American Standard Gauge aren't the same.

Standard gauge is standard gauge the world over. Doesn't matter where you are, deviations plus or minus from it tend to have their own names, like 5' 3" being 'Irish gauge' despite it's use in Australasia.

London Underground A Stock as used on the Metropolitan Line, but unfortunately currently being phased out and replaced by S Stock, with all out of service in 2012 after over 50 years in use.

You could probably capture the rim/tyre better on the wheels with a pixel wide line of lighter shading and then darken the existing wheels. Also I'm pretty sure that even though they're disc wheels they do have holes in them.

Not to be a snarker or anything, but why is it unfortunate to replace 50 year old and beat up trains?

Because we tend to favour the older trains in Britain. For instance a Virgin Pendelino which is modern has a somewhat cramped interior with no legroom and not much luggage room whilst the older Mk3 and Mk2 loco hauled stock was somewhat more commodious. Bottom line is there is a running tradition over here of bollocking up the replacement product for something. When they introduced new stuff on the tube a while back they ran into a problem with the automatic door system required you to stop in the most exact of positions at stations so you could actually leave the train, needless to say trying to do that with a loaded train on a day to day basis isn't really practical.
