BV P 198 was a design project during World War II for a single-seat high-altitude jet fighter.

Arado TEW 16/43-19

[ img ]

The Arado TEW 16/43-19 was a development of a multi-purpose version of the Ar 334 Arado. However, wasn't built due to the success of the Ar 334 and the Me 262.

Nice, although shading is rather very non-standard.

Payen unbuilt racers

Payern's design passion before WWII was with high speed racers driven by relatively low powered engines, that required him to work on superlative aerodynamics. He designed a slew of potential models, but with the destruction of his facility in the War a lot of information on his aircraft has been lost. I've modelled a couple of his better known designs that showcase his thoughts - designs that look like they could come from Burt Rutan's Scaled Composities today, rather than being designed 85 years ago.

Continuing with his "Avion-Flèche" family, the Pa 350CD (Coupe Deutsch) was an initial plan for the 1939 Cup race. Notable for tailplane plates that held skid tips, negating the need for his usual retractable outriggers for ground handling.

The Pa430HV (Haute Vitesse) was perhaps the pinnacle of the "Avion-Flèche" racers, moving away from the engine constraints of the Deutsch Cup and moving into the performance space of single-engined fighters in a twin-engined machine.

Unfortunately none of his designs actually competed as racers - even those that were constructed, and though a contemporary Bugatti racer was rebuilt a flying model (with catastrophic results), only a museum model of the Pa 22/2 has been built.

I have never been able to decide if Payen was ahead of his time or simply too ambitious to realise these.
The poor pilot of the Pa 350 or 430 would have a terrible view, approach and landing would be more of an act of faith than anything!

Payen unbuilt military designs

Payen's "Avion-Flèche" concept had potential beyond racers and single-seat fighters, and Payen tried several times to interest the French military in heavier models.

[ img ]

The Payen Pa 310CB was designed for the 1937 C.2 (2 seat fighter) programme. The design never progressed from the drawing board, and lost out to the SNCASE SE.100.

The Payen Pa321AC "Air Cruiser" was submitted for both the 1934 and 1937 C.3 fighter programmes as a heavy fighter/light bomber. Like all of Payen's designs visibilty for the pilot would have been extremely poor with the far-rear location of the cockpit. Once again the complexity of the propulsion system and the novelty of the design led to no official interest. France instead built the Potez 630.

[ img ]

In 1938 Mitsubishi contacted Payen to develop a carrier-based bomber from the Pa 112. Payen developed the Pa 400 with a novel (for the time) nosewheel undercarriage. As international politics became chilly Payen decided not to get French approval to export the design, and Japan instead developed the Nakajima B6N Tenzan "Jill".
But ... in 1941 American intelligence reviewed a Japanese magazine that had published a picture of a fighter aircraft called the Suzukaze 20. Expecting this to be a type about to enter service it was allocated the code name "Omar". This aircraft was an obvious development of Payen's "Avion-Flèche", however it was an intelligence ruse rather than a real design.

Great additions with these very-little-known planes.
Just the vertical stabilzers (esp. in the aft parts) look bit bulky on plan views.

My (seemingly) biannual update of my first FD never-were, now with an angled landed view and stats from the actual proposal.
