This is not that stupid as you think. Ground pressure did not exceed 0.6 kg/cm2, and this tank weighed 60 tons. It's all thanks to that four sets of tracks.

To put that into perspective, that's about how much ground pressure the average house cat exerts. Theoretically, you can have it run over your freakin' head and you have a fairly good chance of coming out alive.

No limits? Right; so anything goes, and of course nobody was fool enough to begin production of such a propestorous tank. The Germans also had their take on this, and also the Americans, British, but not to this degree. All a waste of time.

The tank successfully underwent all trials. However, it was abandoned by Nikita Khrushchev, who was a supporter of guided-missile tanks.

According to the book I got the scan from it wasn't designed for amphibious travel but to resit blast waves from nearby nuclear explosions. That's why it has a boat hull. Having seen the boat hull of a LAV2 (ASLAV) that has surfed over an IED blast wave that stripped the tyres from the wheels and knocked over some nearby palm trees I would say the concept would work.

The four tracks on the Obj 279 were not to lower ground pressure for soft terrain but to spread the weight out so to avoid tipping from the blast wave. Ground pressure would only be half that of a similar weight conventional tank so around 8 psi (0.6 kg/sqcm) which is about the same as a human on two feet and about 10 times more than a snow mobile. I still wouldn't recomend anyone puts their head under it because without the padding of human or cat's feet those tracks will still exert quite a bit of ripping motion to your face.
