Yeah, Mirage III, Mirage F-1, Mirage-2000, F-16 and F-5 II, all considered by Yugoslavia but resons Nestin was talking about prevailed.

Nice drawinng, did think some other AU Mirage F1 customers. Lebanon replacing their Mirage III and Hunters, Rhodesia replacing the Hunter and Canberra, New Zealand replacing the A4

There was intense cooperation of Yugoslavia and France, the Gazelle helicopters were build under license in SOKO factory in Yugoslavia, and Novi Avion (New aircraft) project of Yugoslav combat aircraft was inspired by Rafale, similar as Orao was inspired by Jaguar.

Wow, I had no idea. Neat! I actually also did an F-5E (License built by SOKO), but I figured the Yugoslavs would want something a bit more capable Air-defense wise. Mirage F1 seemed the most logical choice.

F-5 Tiger II was seriously evaluated in summer of 1980. Test pilot Suad Hamzić praised the aircraft but decision was to get more MiG-21bis, last one in 1983. Branko Bilbija tested both Mirage-2000 and MiG-29 in 1986. and was in favor of MiG. F-16 was flown by Air Force commander himself in 1990.

Great work on the paint schemes, particularly the Vučko. :)

Btw. speaking of could-be Yugoslav fighter purchases: I was wondering if the Yugoslavia was interested in SAAB Draken or Viggen? YPA made significant purchases of swedish hardware (Bofors L70, RBS-15, Giraffe radars etc.) and in light of country's non-aligned stance buying SAAB's doesn't seem unlikely. I read somewhere remark that there was an idea to buy license for Tunnans in 1950s but was dropped because it would be too difficult for the industry to handle at that time (and before they would manage, the product would be hopelessly outdated already).

For Yugoslavia money was always an issue, country went technical bancrupcy in 1982. and was in economical (and any other) decline in the 1980s. That is why it's kept using 2nd generation MiG-21 until 1987. when everyone in the east already had MiG-23 or F-16, Mirage, SAAB 37 or some other 3rd/4th gen. fighter in the west. "Mini Rafale" was on the drawing board but remaind there forever.

Yes, I know this. But I was wondering about if SAAB's were considered in 1960s or 1970s.

(as for "everyone in the east already had MiG-23" - most WarPac countries had just 1 regiment each of these and majority were still MiG-21's, with PF/PFM's being a huge chunk of these until the end - in Poland in 1991 2,5 of 8 fighter regiments were still flying these versions - 4 more with M/MF/bis, 1 with MiG-23 and 0,5 with MiG-29 and others weren't that much better off in this regard) ;)
