Thresher seems good to me, except that gun has only 65 rounds. Standard Aden capacity was 150 and similar DEFA had 125 rounds in all Mirage fighters.

I continue to draw. The frontal profile, the plant, the folding wings, etcetera, are hard work. I haven't begun with the two-seater and the other versions yet.

Also, it won't be easy to do something on the same level as the other drawings.

Lockheed F5V Mithras:
[ img ]

In the mid-1970s, a request was issued by the United States Navy for a lightweight fighter with no strike capability to supplement the more expensive Liberty F6L fighter, as well as combat the IJN's recently-adopted Nakajima A13N1 fighter. Boeing, Liberty, Lockheed, McDonnell-Grumman, and Wright-Northrop all sumbitted competing designs, with Lockheed's being selected for production.

The F5V "Mithras" is a twin engine multirole fighter intended as a lightweight platform with advanced avionics. Featuring a delta-canard configuration, the design is intentionally unstable in order to improve maneuverability and reduce drag. Early F5Vs could be armed with up to six AIM-5 Lanceheads and two AIM-8 Wrens, with more recent versions supporting the AIM-77 AMRAAM and AIM-102 BVRAAM. Air-to-ground capabilities were given to the F5V in 1989 as a stopgap measure in order to replace ageing attack aircraft while a new multirole strike fighter could be adopted. At the same time Lockheed marketed a redesigned F6V Super Mithras to the USN in 1991, but was cancelled in favor of VLO requirements. By the time production ended in 1999, approximately 600 F5Vs of all variants had been built.

The first Lockheed XF5V was rolled out on October 3rd, 1980 wearing a high visibility orange and white prototype scheme, and made its maiden flight on Novermber 3, 1980. In total six prototype aircraft were produced, all of which were tested and flown at NAS Patuxent River. Following trials and operational testing by the Navy's evaluation squadrons, the F5V entered service with the Navy in January 1984 and with the Marines in March of that same year.

Other than the United States, the F5V serves in the armed forces of four other nations: the Republic of Australia, Empire of Brazil, Kingdom of Italy, and Liberia.

And rumor has it that more paranormal elements may operate the F5V as well... (Happy Halloween ;))

Hispano Aviación HA-1000 Astral

I apologize in anticipation for my poor English. I hope it is comprehensible.

1980 Fleet Defense Fighter challenge

Background:

The story is inspired by the ucronia "Duel of Eagles" which was published in the Foro General Militar. It is sadly only ist available in Spanish.

https://www.militar.org.ua/foro/ucronia ... 36355.html

Summary: Spain defeats the USA in the war of 1898 (the history explains how) and in 1914 joins the Central Empires, which win the Great War. Spain industrializes and integrates its colonies, developing its economy.

From here on it is a personal creation. Spain and Japan fought in 1914 and 1942; since then they have maintained a tense peace. Spain maintains a carrier force but cannot afford the cost of supercarriers. UK (Spain's rival) has developed the Harrier, and Spain decides to develop a similar aircraft but with better performance. The new aircraft must have the following characteristics:

- Short run takeoff and vertical landing.

- Supersonic or at least transonic.

- All weather interception capability.

- Capable to use radar guided missiles.

In the course of its development it was decided to build a two-seater version with full combat capability and another one for tactical support that could operate from the short runways of the Pacific islands. ENMASA develops the Hidra engine, with rotating nozzles and afterburner. Hispano Aviación builds the HA-1000 Astral (Astral means "of the stars" but also "axe" in old Spanish). In 1976 the first prototype was flown and in 1980 series production began.

The HA-1000 Astral prototypes

[ img ]

Description.

The Astral is a high swept wing monoplane made of aluminum alloys with titanium elements. Was powered by a Hidra turbofan with four swiveling nozzles and afterburner. The fixed inlets were less efficient but lighter and simpler, though there were spring-loaded suction relief doors above of each inlet to provide greater airflow for take-off. The landing gear is a bicycle type. The pilot had an ejection seat Martin Baker zero/zero.

The 8th Aircraft Squadron of the Spanish Navy, on board the Glorioso aircraft carrier, received its first planes in 1981, and the 14th Air Force Squadron in 1982.

The Astral is also chosen by Argentina, but only six aircraft had been delivered when the Falklands crisis broke out. Operating from Port Stanley with Banderilla and Drake (air to air) and Lamia (anti-ship) missiles, they caused serious losses to the English. The Philippine and Cuban air forces (members of the Hispanic Commonwealth) also purchase the Astral. Italy selected it for its light aircraft carrier Garibaldi. The Luftwaffe obtains the license for the ground version.
