Post subject:  List of Ships in Fiction

This project has grown out of a thread begun by Sailor82 several years ago at Warship Discussion 3.0. Sadly, Sailor departed us before his work was complete and now the thread has been lost.

This thread is an attempt to catalogue and rationalise ships that have appeared in fiction (books, films and television). This list excludes manga creations, ships which are obviously parodies, merchant ships or sailing ships.
It is by no means complete but I hope it may be of use for those of you naming AU ships and perhaps some of these will be drawn too. The list is in alphabetical order, within nations by class of ship broadly chronologically. I have attempted to assign classes if none is known or by the visual depiction. Descriptions are included where possible and pennants assigned and possible alternatives identified.

For the most up to date listings in separate sections (1860-1900, 1900-45, 1945-2020 and 2020-2100) and appendices of fictional carrier-borne aircraft, fictional weapons and fictional electronic systems can be found on p.5 & p.6 of this thread.

really good start.... are you planning to add any reference to the Books, Films etc that these appear.and would HMS Ranger (an Resolution class Submarine from James Bond be relevent the spy who loved me) HMS Retribution (an Resolution class submarine in Skydancer a book by Geoffrey Archer) and HMS Temeraire (another Resolution class submarine in the Fighting Temeraire a book by John Winton)

Thanks Shippy. I'd forgotten about those two Resolutions. I was unsure what type HMS Temeraire was from the info on the book I had and I assumed it was an SSN. It doesn't have an 'R' name so for now I've left it as an SSN. I find there are two types of author, one who knows what he's talking about and uses a plausible name or one who just makes up a name that sounds good but is totally unrelated to the class or type of vessel they seek to portray.

heuhen, I can't remember the name of the novel but it involved a NATO task force and it had frigates from across the nations plus France. I had assumed it was a US design either because a) Sailor82's post hinted that or b) I assumed given the timeframe a US design would have been used as a basis (perhaps some DLG/ Coontz class design?)

There are a couple of real WW2 mis-identified vessels in here from the wartime Janes etc. too. Since these vessel never existed they classify in my book as fictional.

I'd welcome any additional info or missing ships and I'll keep this updated as I find more.

I think the novel you're thinking about is Threat Warning Red. That's also where the Danish one is from I believe.
