Whilst I personally have no desire to join the ranks of the current British armed forces for one reason or another I've had several relatives serve (mainly during the Great War).
My paternal great grandfather received the military medal whilst serving with the Royal Artillery for picking up a live shell from an ammunition limber and tossing it out of the dugout that his field gun was in.
Both great uncles on my mother's side were killed one at Gallipoli and one in France/Belgium who is buried at the Thiepval memorial.
Both my grandparents were either too young or in a reserved occupation to serve during WW2 though one did serve with the z-battery unguided rocket AA.

Forgot to add that my maternal grandfather served in late 1920's (about 1928-1930) in Army, but did not went to WW2 war because he had already six children in Oct 1940, older 7 years. Total he made 11 with my maternal grandmother. For my paternal grandfather I have no idea, he died before I was born. My father does not remember any history from war, but that grandfather served his military duty in mid 1930's.

My maternal grandfather served in the RN during WWI and was recalled in WWII and served on Big Guns. As of 2013, his service record was still "Classified" by the Ministry of Defence, although we have absolutely no idea why. All we do know, is that during WWII he was sent to America to help the USN train on the use of Big Guns.

My paternal grandfather served in the GASC during WWII as a Driver and was evacuated at Dunkirk and arrived back in France on D Day+5 and served the remainder of his war in France, Belgium and Germany.

My father served in the RN as a Commissioned Officer Artificer and served in the Far East and Indian Ocean in addition to the Home Fleet, ending his service based at HMS Pembroke, Chatham.

I always intended to join the RN but ended up joining the Royal Signals and served in the UK, Cyprus and Gulf War 1 in 1990/91 attached to 3 Cdo Bde in Northern Iraq.

I commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army in 1998. I've been a proud gunner for 16 years. Served in every type of field artillery unit: 155mm self propelled, MLRS, HIMARS, 155mm and 105mm towed.

Spent time in Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

My step-dad would probably say when he and his college, stole all alcohol in the officer mess. and brought it with them up on a platform on an radio tower at Jan Mayen. they got so drunk they had to be airlifted down to the frigate with an helicopter.

Or that time the was anchored up next to an British destroyer. They went aboard the Destroyer and "borrowed" the mess sign, then hidden it onboard the Norwegian frigate. Next morning when the Norwegian frigate was on it's way home, the got an "very polite" message from the Brits, where are the sign... But the Norwegian frigate Captain was know for his ... well humor, so he started to send back weird and funny message....

I've never served althoug I've conteplate the idea of joining the Navy many years ago.
My (maternal) grandma's father served in WWI, he was in the Isonzo area and because of miscomunication he and other soldiers were forced to retreat by behind enemy lines after Caporetto. An Austrian sniper trailed them for days killing many until he basically snappped in frustration and went back alone to took him down (My grandma shivered every time she recalled her father's tale).
My (maternal) grandpa's father was an officer in the Army too, I have no idea were he served in WWI, and retired before WWII broke.
My (maternal) great-uncle was in the Army too, he fought in Africa and was one of the few of his unit to come back alive.
My Father is a Police officer (Polizia Italiana, which is technically not an armed force since 1981 but whatever...), but because of personal reasons I have no idea of what his service record is and were, and if, my other paternal parents served in any armed forces.

I have never served. My father served in the Royal Signal Corps in BAOR in the 1970s and was on Cyprus during the invasion on 1974.
My maternal grandfather always wanted to join the Royal Navy and had been a member of the Sea Cadets, but in 1945 when he was drafted he instead found himself in the Army Pay Corps! His brother had a long career in the Army, retiring as a Major (later awarded an MBE for his services in tending servicemen's graves in Cyprus) and his son left the Army a few years ago with the same rank. His sister married a ground staff USAF officer in SAC post-war.
My paternal grandfather also served in the Army just at the end of the war. My paternal grandmother's brother served in the Army post-war, I don't much of the details but he served in the Intelligence Corps.
Members of my maternal grandfather's family served in the Army during the 1890s and early 1900s. One of them was an Essex bargeman sailing around the east coast during the Great War, I have his service medals.
My maternal grandmother's uncle was at Dunkirk and later served as an AA gunner on the Arctic Convoys where he was injured and had half his stomach removed. Sadly, his injuries led him to commit suicide during the 1950s. My father's great-grandmother lost a brother during the Great War.

When you look back at the family tree its surprising how many members have been members of the armed forces at some point, either voluntarily or conscripted. Luckily most seemed to have survived the world wars.

Personally, I served in the US Army from 2007 to 2008 as a E-4 Humint Specialist. I had to be medically discharged due to being injured in the field.

My oldest younger brother served in the US Army from 1999 to 2004 as a Cav Scout. He served in Iraq in early 2003 in the opening battles for Baghdad. He was injured in a helicopter crash and sent home.

My next younger brother served in the US Army from 2005 to 2009 as a mechanic, serving in Iraq and ending his career in Korea.

My uncle served in the US Army from 1982 to 1985, mostly in Germany

My childhood friend is still in service with the US Navy in Ordinance. In 2001, he served on the Theodore Roosevelt in the opening strikes of Operation Enduring Freedom putting messages on bombs. In 2006, he served on the Enterprise during a tour over in the Gulf.

My cousin's is a retired Marine officer whose office in the Pentagon was destroyed in the 2001 attack.

My great uncle served in World War II and the Korean War as a Master Chief in the Navy.

Another great uncle served in World War II as a marine in the Pacific theatre.

My great-great-grandfather with his four brothers emigrated to the US in 1912 and joined the US Army in 1918 to fight in the trenches.

Entered USN 1977, rose MM1(E-6), changed rates in the late 80's to FC, retired in 1997.
