I don't want to spoil anyones fun with that Logo-designing, but to me the first thing I think about when hear "SB" is Służba Bezpieczeństwa (although I'm using this acronym while referring to Shipbucket quite often), and the Thiel's design with anchor above looks to me like "StB" - Státní bezpečnost.

a few tryouts. in no way meant to be an finalised icon, but it was just what my mind was playing with a bit...... or in other words, I am not content with any of them.

I'd have to say that Ace and Laser are on the money. Would be interesting to have a vote.

[ img ][ img ] another try. Zephyr's mini tug reminded me that tugs, due to their huge machinery, high masts and short hulls, have an relatively 'boxy' shape from the side, making them fit better in an square icon then the warships we mostly have. so, I took the first navy tug I could think of and tried it out.
while the first one is a bad logo if it is small, on larger sizes it shows exactly what we do. the second one works better on small sizes, but when larger it gives absolutely no extra value to the word shipbucket, while SB would obscure the drawing behind it

of course, with the silhouette, I could do the same as I did with the bow on the ones posted above.

EDIT: wondering what is the most well known shipbucket drawing, to experiment a bit......

I want a clean, anti-aliased logo with no specific ship. It needs to be scalable to at least 1000x1000 pixels and shrink down to 16x16 without weird distortion. That means no aliased outlines (like WhyMe's examples).

Thiel's example is what I'm leaning towards. Re: comments about calling it "SB" rather than Shipbucket, well I'll just leave it at this: you all have been doing it a lot longer than I have. ;) I'm in favor of it as an easy way to make a square-dimensioned logo. Banners can use the full name.

The reason for a 16x16 size is that we want to be able to use it as a Favicon for the site - this does mean that it can (and probably will be) different than the larger sizes, but it's something to keep in mind.

Indeed, something along those lines is quite nice.
