What type of ship do you mean by "coastal defence"? If you are talking about a smaller coastal patrol ship, then a 20mm cannon will be just fine. If you are referring to the classical definition of a coastal defence ship, take a look at some real life examples like Golly's Vainamoinen class or Heuhen's Norge.

This is an classic Coastal defense ship:

- guns powerful enough to destroy cruisers.
- Guns strong enough to irritate Battleship.
- guns with better range than most battleship in that time periode.
- good armored, and divided up in so many compartment that it can survive direct hit from an Battleship.
- Fast enough to lure any ships close to the coastline, and land mounted guns and torpedo batteries.

Yes, you'll have to be more specific about the kind of ship you want. If the 20mm cannon is the only armament and the defining feature, you can go for a patrol boat of less than 100t if you want to keep it fast. Assuming you are talking about a modern design of course.
So really, you need more info on :
- The era you have in mind
- The conflict intensity level it can take, from peacetime police work to full militarization for high-intensity conflicts
- The missions your ship is designed for, specifically:
* Harbor patrol
* Sea lane/EEZ patrol
* Border patrol/customs/law enforcement
* Environmental protection
* etc.
- The mobility you want to give it:
* Range and patrol area
* Reaction time, based on the range: emphasis on high cruise speed or high dash speed?
* Autonomy, i.e. days at sea without replenishment
* Max distance to shore depending on your geography
* Max sea state depending on what part of the world it will be in service
- Lastly, the equipment you want to give it:
* Sensors beyond a simple navigation radar (more radars? Air search? Passive EO/IR search? Sonar?)
* Baseline weaponry in the widest sense (from firefighting equipment all the way to antiship missiles)
* Optional weaponry that can be fitted when the balloon goes up
* On-board space for boats and helicopters
* On-board facilities for passengers and mission equipment (search parties etc.)
- Propulsion, crew size, hull shape and displacement are determined by the factors above.

So far there are too many variables to really go forward.

Here is my creation, so far i think its great, it is armed with a 70mm i believe which is a little too much. It has counter-measures if locked on with some sort of lock on missle or rocket, it has lights for looking for vessels at night and a deployable RHIB. It can be out at sea for 6 days, but after 7 IT needs to dock and re-supply. It has a decent speed, and seperate compartments. Oh and it has 4 20mm ''machine guns''.

Hi Hexel:
Your bow will be very wet! And your fire control "dish" is too low. Cheers.

There is a lot that is wrong on the drawing, and could have been done different.

- What you have drawn is basically a large corvette, small frigate. that is badly armed.
- the gun is an 76mm not 70mm.
- What is the mission of the vessel.
- what year is it build.
- Who big does it need to be.
- The hull is to deep.
- superstructure is quit big.
- radar and sensors should in most cases be mounted up in the mast.
- wheres the funnel.
- That propeller is an nono here in Shipbucket.

If all you need is an ship to patrol the coast line, you can use an Coast guard ship for that:
[ img ]
(Norwegian coast guard vesel. gun: 57mm. "If-War": gun: 3", Missile: Penguine (Anti ship) and SAM (Anti Air), Torpedoes: 2 triple.

if you need a military ship that are tasked to attack oter ship when entering you'r coastline, then all you need is an PT-boat:
[ img ]
(Norwegian missile and torpedo boat. Guns: 40mm, Missile: Penguine (Anti ship) and SAM (Anti Air), torpedo: up to 4 tubes.

Or do you need an ship that can work along the coastline and carry a bigger punch:
