I believe these two ships may change their appearance in the late 30's early 40's to CVE/CVL's. The Japanese invested a lot into preparing their 'tenders' for quick conversion to carriers at a later date. The hull certainly looks like it could carry a lot more speed than 21 knots. Put a 40k shp destroyer installation in and it would probably make 25-26 knots.

Good drawing too!

Very nice drawing,................ on which I've crafted the two Hakugeis is that Jingei themselves were initially planned as 14.500T-full load units, then scaled back to 8.000/8.500T after the WNT cut the IJN naval construction program, negatin the need of ships that big.
makes sense thanks for the reply :)

Close enough. There will be ships that will follow this pattern, for now the Hakugeis are not part of them, but it is also true that I've not decided their post-1939 fate yet :)

Ki-3 Class Submarine:

Developement of a successor class for the Ki-1 class was in planning stage since early 1922, but developement was halted until the first of the Ki-1 units completed it's sea trails, so that the program was not finalized until early 1925. For the new class, Koko no Kaigun Naval Staff ultimately opted for a modified Japanese L4 Type units (whose design was nothing more than a license copy of the British third batch of L-Class submarines), the hull was lenghtened slightly in order to fit more powerful engines for a top speed of 16 knots surfaced and 9 knots submerged. The units displaced 1.016T standard and 1.359T submerged. Other specification were the same as the japanese counterparts: six 533mm torpedo tubes at the bow and a 76mm/40 anti-aicraft gun, endurance of 5.500 nutical miels surfaced (at 10 knots) and 80 miles submerged (at 4 knots). Test depth was 60 meters and crew complemement amounted to 48 men.
Eight units, named and numbered Ki-3 through Ki-10, were ordered at Kumoi Arsenal by mid 1925. The lead ship was laid down by the end of the year, with the others following by 1928. One unit, Ki-9, was reordered on a larger design and built at Toumachi Naval Arsenal. The seven remaining ships were commissioned between 1929 and 1931, replacing all older British built units and forming two Sensuitai.

During the Pacific War all units operated closer to home waters as the the later, larger submarines were deemed more capable. Ki-6 was lost in Aleutian waters, with the other units sunk between 1945 and 1946. Only Ki-5 survived the war, just to be immediately taken out of service and scrapped.

Ki-9 Class Submarine:

Initially planned as one of the Ki-3 Class units Ki-9 was reorderd from Kumoi Arsenal to Toumachi Naval Arsenal to be built as a different design. In order to familiarize with large type submarines to be put in service later Ki-9 was built as a simple and straight copy of a Kaidai-3B with slighlty more powerful engines for a surfaced top speed of 21-knots. Every other specification was the same as the original Japanese units: 101m long, 8m abeam, drafting 4,9m Ki-9 displaced 1.635T surfaced and 2.300T submerged. Test depth was 60 meters, submerged top speed 8-knots and endurance amounted to 10.000-nm surfaced (at 10 knots) and 60 submerged (at 3 knots). Crew was 63 officeers and men. Armament was composed of 8 533mm torpedo tubes, six at the bow and two at the stern, augmented by a 120mm/40 Type11 gun.
Laid down in 1927, Ki-9 was launched in 1929 and commissioned in 1930, operating with the smaller Ki-3 at first and then with the larger Ki-11

On December 7th 1941, as part of the simultaneous joint attacks made by the IJN and KnK, Ki-9 was part of the submarine scouting force that escorted KnK 1st Koku Sentai while it attacked Midway Island, later taking part in the unsuccessful hunt for the damaged USS Lexington. After a year of mixed-fortune patrols against allied shipping Ki-9 was stationed at Kumoi, were she operated as a training vessel for the rest of the war. The worn-out submarine was decommissioned in late 1946 and then scrapped.
