New Hampshire-Class Battleships
The basic assumption of this thread is that the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty failed to be agreed upon. As such the South Dakota-class battleships were never cancelled and in fact was followed by the four New Hampshire-class battleships, behemoth dreadnoughts heavier and nearly as long as the Iowa-class, sporting a main armament of 8 eighteen inch/50 caliber guns, 16 six inch/53 caliber secondary battery and 8 five inch/25 caliber dual purpose battery.

Tremendous work. The drawings are both well-executed and well thought out, and I really like how they don't seem drawn in some final 1940s guise and then 'devolved' back to some early version. Instead, their evolution makes a great deal of sense.

What's with New Hampshire's strange black-turreted paint job?

Also, I wonder about the likelihood of rangefinders on each 6" turret. On many bearings, the guns can train on a target but one of the rangefinder hoods is obscured.

I wonder if, in a late-war anti-Kamikaze refit, the 6" turrets might be traded for 5/38. Less weight of fire, but there were few Japanese surface targets anyway. Thinking about it, I'm not sure the 5"/38 installations you've shown would be practical. The mounts ought to take up a great deal more space below decks than whatever the 5"/25 required for hoists.

Here are the details for the Measure 1 scheme

Vertical Surfaces:

All approximately vertical surfaces above the top of the stacks shall be painted Light Gray 5-L.

Horizontal Surfaces:

All horizontal surfaces except wood decks shall be painted Dark Gray 5-D. The systems differ only in the painting of the vertical surfaces. In case of doubt, as on sloping surfaces, use Dark Gray 5-D.


Notes:

The camouflage painting need not be exact or carried into corners. Small gear, wires, rigging, and areas permanently in shadow, as under boats, etc., need not be painted with the camouflage colors. There is no objection to exact or careful painting which may be desired for the sake of good appearance at close range.

All bright or shiny objects, no matter how insignificant, shall be painted, covered, or removed.

Glass windows shall be covered or removed, especially during the day in sunny weather, and at night when anticipating searchlight discovery. Insofar as conditions permit, similar precautions shall be taken on airport lenses.

Wood Decks.
Wood decks, except on submarines, shall not be darkened pending further instructions. The best paint or stain for this purpose is being investigated.

Ships painted in Measure 1 should be all dark grey from the funnel tops and down. Yours is still light grey, with the exception of the turrets. There were experimental measueres 1a through c, but they all used blue instead of dark grey.

I know not every surface needs to be painted dark grey, but as far as I know, none of the battleships had a mix as shown here.

This is an excellent reboot. A really nice looking and powerful design that feels completely real and with good progression through the various refits and rebuildings too.
