The Amphion was designed by master shipbuilder viceadmiral Fredric Henric af Chapman for king Gustavus III. The Amphion is actually considered one of his worst designs due to the poor handling caracteristics of the ship. Nickname the golden clog by its crew. Mostly used as a pleasure yacht on lake Mälaren this was a minor problem. The king used the ship as staff headquaters and flagship during his war with Russia 1788-90- She became av veteran of Fredrikshamn, the Viborg gauntlet an the battle of Svensksund. The ship remained i the reserve fleet as an auxilluary and hospital ship until 1885 when she was broken up except her stern gallery and royal cabin, which is displayed at the Swedish maritime museum in Stockholm o day.
