HEAVY CRUISER - JUPITER CLASS 1927

The Jupiter class was built specifically as flagships for cruiser squadrons and task forces, well armed and with sufficient command space. The Jupiter class was considered the premier class of cruisers in the navy until the Rhiannon class was built.
[ img ]
Displacement: 15,242 t standard; 16,670 t normal; 17,812 t full load
Length: 683 ft OA / 675 ft Waterline
Beam: 70 ft
Draught: 28 ft
Propulsion: 12 Boilers; 4 Geared Steam Turbines; 4 Shafts
Speed: 32 knots
Range: 9500 NM @ 14 knots
Complement: 902 + Flag Staff
Armament:
10 x 8"/50 (5 x 2)
4 x 5.5"/50 (4 x 1)
4 x 4" HA (4 x 1)
4 x 2 Pdr (4 x 1)
Aviation:
2 Catapults
3-4 Floatplanes

Ships in Class
-------------
Jupiter (1928)
Odin (1927)
Zeus (1928)
Osiris (1929)

1938-41 Rebuilds
The Six-Weeks War of 1936 revealed an unfortunate, and new, reality with naval warfare - the advent of airpower. Navies on both sides of the conflict quickly realized that the anti air defences of their warships was whoafully inadequate. Beginning in 1937 ungrades to correct this deficiency were quickly planned, with virtually all major warships getting some manner of additional light AA weapons and, in many cases, new secondary armaments as well. Fire control was also substantionally upgraded.
In the case of the Jupiters, this was accomplished by significant rearming of all secondaries and light weapons. The 4 single 5.5" guns were replaced with the new 4.5"/45 enclosed twin mounts, and 40 and 20mm mounts were added wherever possible. Radar was also installed along with several light AA directors. New catapults were also added to accomodate newer aircraft.
[ img ]
Armament:
10 x 8"/50 (5 x 2)
8 x 4.5"/45 (4 x 2)
18 x 40mm (1 x 4; 7 x 2)
40 x 20mm (20 x 2)
Aviation:
2 Catapults
3-4 Floatplanes

Ships in Class (date rebuilt finished)
-------------
Jupiter (1941)
Zeus (1940)
Osiris (1941)

The Odin was rebuilt differently and more extensively than her sisters. Heavily damaged aft during an air raid, it was determined to enlarge the aft hanger to allow for more floatplane capacity and #4 and #5 turrets were deemed irreperable from damage. Because of this battle damage, and a desire to return her to servicable condition as quickly as possible, she was the first of the Jupiters to complete the upgrades. Because of the rebuilt aft sections, her profile ended considerably different from her sisters, and some consider her a seperate class after 1938. Radar was added in a second, shorter, refit in 1941.
[ img ]
Armament:
6 x 8"/50 (3 x 2)
4 x 4.7"/45 (4 x 1)
20 x 40mm (1 x 4; 8 x 2)
36 x 20mm (18 x 2)
Aviation:
2 Catapults
5-6 Floatplanes

Ships in Class (date rebuilt finished)
-------------
Odin (1938)
