Thank you Rodondo for those Japanese fonts, and I'll greatly appreciate smaller font version.
And by the way from my Israeli merchant ships the Hebrew fonts

Rodondo, you've inspired me to de-lurk! I like your kana, but given Novice's desire for a smaller set I found a set of 5x7 katakana on a VFD maker's website recently so I've turned their pattern into a png:

Then again, why would the japanese use Katakana on one of their ships?
Very well done otherwise. If nobody objects I can have a crack at small-ifying the Hiragana.

I'd have to ask my mate's Japanese wife for confirmation but I'd read that katakana were more fashionable than hiragana before the Second World War, to the extent that there were people named in katakana. Maybe they'll be useful for AU designs...

Ah, ok. To my knowledge Katakana is mainly used to write foreign words.

THX for the katakana, Scharnhorst. And you are right in general KHT, as the Katakana was used, mainly, to write foreign words. It is also should be noted that Japanese merchant ships did not write the word "Maru" in Japanese script on the hull.

I just happened to notice this image - a photo from 1939 of the real-life Japanese destroyer Yukikaze of the Kagerō class, with its name in katakana on the hull! Wikipedia isn't always wrong after all...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Yukikaze_2.jpg

Pre-War Japanese practice when writing horizontally was to write right-to-left, or from front to back (bow to stern) on the sides of vehicles. Right, no more Japanese geekery, honest!
