So, as a Cornishman I have decided to come up with a Cornish AU, based on Cornwall becoming independent from the UK, shortly after Scotland (with a referendum in 2014). I recognise that there may be economic issues, but as Cornwall already receives a lot of EU money for development, it could be feasible. I will in due course start a thread in the AU forum when I have some SB-scale drawings and a bit more of the background written.

Here is the Air Corps of the newly formed Cornish Defence Force, with bases at the ex- RAF St Mawgan and RNAS Culdrose, but part of Culdrose would still be leased to the Royal Navy due to the large rotary wing presence and ideal location, combined with providing an income for Cornwall. I've drawn up an inventory (which I've tried to keep realistic) below, with all aircraft drawn FD scale.

8x Eurocopter EC145 for SAR, EMS, law enforcement and utility/transport:

1x Piaggio P.180 for VIP transport within Europe

2x EADS CASA CN-235 for maritime patrol, SAR and medium transport (when modular MPA equipment removed, if required). This provides fixed wing SAR coverage for a new SAR area with responsibility given from the UK to Cornwall

4x EMB 314 for air defence (and training for ground attack)

3x DHC-6-300 for transport and providing an air link to the Isles of Scilly

Nicely done. I see this Air Force is somewhat Irish-sized (and organized). :)

Thanks eswube, I did have a look at what the IAC flies, I thought it would be a good place to start to come up with something realistic, as well as other small European air forces.

Why is that? I look forward to seeing it though.

One question on the 'Duchy of Cornwall'; as this is the fiefdom of the Prince of Wales, are you figuring him in as the ruler?

Also, with a population of just over half a million how do you propose to fund such a defence force?

Cornish pasties, because they cannot be made anywhere else.

EDIT: And tin and possibly lead/arsenic.

Yes, the Duke of Cornwall would be Head of State of the Duchy of Cornwall whilst also being Prince of Wales and heir to the throne in the UK and the Commonwealth Realms. He would have similar powers and role as the Queen in the UK, in mainly a ceremonial role with government carried out by the Cornish Assembly.

Initially, clearly Cornwall could not afford such a force. However, I would expect the EU to provide some financial support, maybe with aircraft leased to begin with. The UK may also give some support with the transition of airspace and territorial waters to Cornwall, with the Royal Navy also paying to keep RNAS Culdrose open for them to continue to use.

Just for comparison, according to wiki:
Malta - pop: 453,000 and 13 aircraft
Montenegro - pop: 625,000 and 23 active aircraft

Definitely Cornish pasties. That's all they'll need, the whole world will be buying them by the container load ;)
Maybe some Cornish ice cream too - it is the best in the world after all.

I suppose they could reopen some of the tin mines, and increase capacity at the china clay pits. Fishing and farming would also be important exports as well as a large income from tourism. I won't go for the easy option and say they find oil... :)

Thanks for the info; having reconsidered the actual size of air wing it doesn't seem so far fetched as I first thought. Re Chuck Windsor...um? That could be interesting, he's certainly loaded, and a bit of tax dodger, so having him as your ruler might fit in; and your Duchy can join all the other tax havens, where the worlds rich are now hiding their money. ;)
