Thanks. I've always loved the liners of the period and felt like producing something like them for Sieran.

Also here is an aircraft that I requested Rowdy36 have a go at drawing for me, the Korolev RP-2 Massa Bomber/Transport;

[ img ]

[ img ]

Designed initially to serve as a long range bomber during the late 1920s, the Korolev RP-2 was the first large monoplane to be built for the newly organised Sieranian Republic Air Force. At the same time a transport version was developed to serve alongside the bombers in logistic roles. The primary difference between the two designs was the 4 engines in podded push-pull configuration of the bomber replaced by the trimotor arrangement of the Transport. the Bombers engine configuration was inefficient with the pusher engines suffering from turbulent airflow from the forward engine however the configuration was chosen to provide the power and redundancy required for long range operations in conjunction with the need for space in the nose for the bombsight equipment.
Construction was a hybrid of old and new techniques, the main construction being of steel tube framing with doped fabric stretched over it with corrugated sheet metal applied over the forward fuselage where there was potential risk for fire from the engines igniting the inherently flammable dope.

As a bomber the RP-2 was capable of lifting 2,500kg (5,512 lb) of bombs or as a transport had capacity for up to 12 passengers. The transport featured very similar construction to the bombers which in theory was thought to allow for them to be converted to makeshift bombers as needed though this was never carried out in practice. The bombers were slow and lumbering with a maximum speed of only 97 knots when at max load and struggled to climb above 2,000m (6 562ft) due to the poor performance of their engines at high altitudes. Both designs were produced with skis for use in Winter.

Both the bombers and transports saw action over China in 1937 when a squadron was sent to assist the Chinese in their war of resistance against the Japanese. The woefully obsolete bombers suffered extensively at the hands of the far more modern Japanese fighters and were swiftly relegated to secondary duties. A few survived into WW2 in these secondary roles but none saw action.

Wow! Great additions - both Ravenstvo and RP-2!

The liner is excellent, a true inspiration, and an imaginary ship at that. I stand in awe by your side feeling very humble...

Thanks all. I do try to draw my ships with a lot of references to real designs to keep them looking like real what-ifs and not the typical AU "because I can, it's my AU" attitude. Liners in particular I've always loved but haven't tried drawing many in SB style before.

Anyway, here is the promised drawing of the Ravenstvo's sister ship, the SS Svoboda;

[ img ]

Built to the same overall design of her sister, Svoboda differed in having a blunt bow with increased flare to improve sea keeping by providing more buoyancy in the bow peak. The collision bulkhead had to be shifted aft but apart from that her design was otherwise identical. The new bow did however mean that she was slightly shorter in length than her sister. She lacked the grace of her fractionally (2 month) older sister but proved to be the drier ship. Her bow design also proved more resistant to ice which allowed her to operate for longer without the need of icebreakers.

More drawings of these liners are pending including the incident with the Svoboda in March 19th 1921...stay tuned.

Here are a couple more superb drawings done by Rowdy36 that flesh out two key aircraft of the late 1930s/early 1940s for Sieran.

First up, the Korolev RT-9 Yeger;

[ img ]

Delivered initially in bare metal, the RT-9 was the first Sieranian transport to be built entirely out of metal rather than the traditional composite method. The design team responsible for producing the RP-2T Massa were also behind the design of the RT-9. In fact early proposals for the airliner much more closely matched that of the Massa than its final form. The design was the result of a number of evolutions to build a modern, long range airliner capable of connecting Sieran to Europe and the Americas with minimal stops in foreign territory for fuel. The end result was a superbly streamlined airframe that later went on to influence the design of the TC-2 Chajka.

Second, we have the Litvinov PI-37 'Skopa';

[ img ]

[ img ]

Designed after experience against Japanese land and naval fighters over China, the PI-37 was a lightly built interceptor that would go on to be numerically the most important fighter in the SRAF inventory at the outbreak of war in 1942. Powered by an imported Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp engine and armed with two 20mm cannon in the wings with 7.62mm machine guns firing through the propeller arch, the aircraft was capable of outstanding performance when compared to its older, underpowered predecessors.
Indeed the aircraft had largely resolved the major deficiencies of its older sibling, namely lack of speed and climb rate. The PI-37s wide track undercarriage and rugged but basic construction allowed it to be built and repaired swiftly and allow it to use even the most poorly equipped airbases.

A single squadron saw service in China against the Japanese where it was found that the aircraft compared reasonably well with the Ki-43 though the Zero outmatched it in turn performance. The squadron was recalled to Sieran shortly after the Japanese attack on Anadyr and the declaration of war.

Also another aircraft, this time Eswubes magnificent Il-14P drawing in the post-war livery of Sieranavia;

[ img ]

A series of economic downfalls combined with the damages of war saw Sierans home aviation industry vastly reduced in size and capability. As the population gradually reduced during the 50s and 60s, it became necessary to build foreign designs rather than producing home aircraft. One of these chosen was the Ilyushin Il-14 of which Sieran was able to negotiate a deal with the manufacturer to order half newly built and license build the remainder. This same agreement would also cover the Il-18 and Il-62 later on.

The Il-14s replaced the myriad collection of prewar designs that were worn out after war service and in need of replacing. Even the war veteran li-2s were to be replaced by the new airliners which saw service in some of the most inhospitable climates imaginable. The Il-14 depicted in this drawing was one of the Soviet Built versions and displays the livery that was used from 1952-1967, after which the livery was modified with the addition of painting the wingtips and tailplane red to improve visibility in case of crashes in the Far North.
