Nation: Nova Brittania - New Britain

Another silly AU scenario from me, probably not very plausible though more so than a large rock appearing in the Atlantic as per Atlanta.
Nova Britannia as an entity is made up of the following bits of what is now Canada. Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Anticosti Island and the Magdalen Islands. The idea is exactly as the name says "new Britain" albeit on a smaller scale. Great Britain would of kept hold of Newfoundland and maintained a larger presence in the area until independence in the early fifties. During the late fifties and sixties there were new disputes with Canada about the border of Labrador to Canada which resulted in sporadic skirmishes between 1957 and 1963 involving land air and sea. Relations eased during the mid sixties and continue to the current day. Nova Britannia has good relations with the United States and Atlantia and received military aid from the US from the sixties onwards in the form of Aircraft and Naval Vessels to operate in the Atlantic against the USSR.
From around 1973ish the population of Nova Britannia started to decline (reaching a low point of around 1.2M) with many citizens emigrating to Mainland North America and Atlantia however during the late 1990s the population began to increase reaching 1.77M in 2007).
I apologize if the back story isn't very thorough, though I will try to remedy this in the near future...

Britannia Class Flex-Role Frigates

[ img ]
These vessels are a quite a departure from vessels previously operated by the Britannic navy. More in keeping with modern warfare it was decided that the Absalon concept offered the best returns for the Britannic navy. In Britannic service they are not dissimilar to the Danish ones except they are fitted with Kongsberg Naval Strike Missiles in place of the Harpoons on the Danish vessels. Their areas of operation for the most part are up and down the North Atlantic in cooperation with the Atlantian navy's North Sea Battle-group.

Town Class Corvettes

[ img ]
These vessels in many respects are identical to the South Korean (Ulsan) cousins. The most notable differences between the two is that the Britannic vessels were ordered without Harpoons. They were to be fitted with a navalized Sea Eagle system from Great Britain but with the end of the cold war this was abandoned and until recently the vessels had no SSM/AShM capability. As of 2008 studies were under way to fit a navalized AGM-114 launcher to the vessels. This achieved IOC in 2010 on Souris. Argentia's launchers and systems were ready in early 2011.

Hmm, no inherited 50's surplus RN ships at all? Perhaps an old Daring or two kept going for a while? And you're right by the once richest cod grounds in the world (though admittedly now utterly scoured to death)- would your AU admit for some robust fishery protection?

I was thinking about RN ships such as the Daring or some of the surplus WW2 frigates but provisionally went with the Gearings. I'm open to trying other schemes however.

I'd go for a British ship. Manning is going to be a serious issue for your navy. The less manpower intensive British ships would help a lot there.

Expect to see some WW2 and early cold war era Atlantian boats here for the older stuff, recycling is fun.

Progress has been slow with this though progress to an extent has been made. New national flag (see first post) as well as getting the Rafale sorted.

They're kitbashed from the Rafale M for want of a better solution if you hadn't noticed.

WS70s (Westland produced Blackhawks) Fitted with RR Turbomeca RTM-322-01/089B Turboshafts (@ 1,805kW) BERP IV composite rotor-blades and for those fitted with them FLIR Systems BRITE Star II FLIR/EO gimbles combined terrain following and weather radar and an integrated defensive aids suite (Selex HIDAS) All variants are fitted for carriage of the ESSS stub wings though only the H.10As have been equipped with them. These particular Snow Leopards have features found on the Battlehawk demonstrator from Elbit and Sikorsky. These include an automatic cannon under the fuselage (in the case of the H.10A a BK27) as well as the ability to fire laser guided munitions including precision 70mm rockets AGM-114s and SPIKE-ER ATGMs. The entire fleet of helicopters (sans H.10s) is undergoing a mid life update with the engines receiving a FADEC system and cockpits being upgrade to fully glass. There have been improvements to the airframe with regards to shock absorbing and crash worthiness in cooperation with Atlantia.

The three EC145T2s ordered and delivered in 2011 represent a quantum leap over the previous SAR/twin trainer which were twin conversions of elderly bell 206s which were civilian owned and leased to the NBAF. The EC-145s have begun to be used in the general utility role around the Islands of NB as well as their training role. They like the SAR WS70s have a winch and are fully capable of executing SAR missions themselves. They are also fitted for slung cargo and can take anything up to the size of an ATV or a payload of up-to 1,450kg... They are fitted for but not with armament outriggers (ATE SAWS) and can take pintle mounted door guns in a time of war or for interdiction of vessels in the waters around NB.
